USES AND DESCRIPTIONS
Some of the uses for Llamas include:
- 4-H Projects - We sell Llamas to families whose children participate in 4-H. They use the Llamas as 4-H projects and show the animals in county and state fairs. We also have farm visits from 4-H groups who come see the Llamas as a group activity.
- Archery - One of our largest groups of people interested in renting Llamas are archery and blackpowder hunters. The season is long and early in the year when the snow is not real deep which is well suited to Llama use. Some pack into remote locations to hunt and others just use them to pack out their game. Some people will call us only after they have harvested an animal and just use the Llamas for a day or two to pack it out. Rifle hunters also rent our Llamas but we don't have as much demand during the later seasons when there is deep snow and cold.
- Backcountry - Of course the main use as pack animals is to access the backcountry. Llamas can allow access for elderly, or handicapped, or injured people who can't carry backpacks. People with younger children are also a large percentage of our customers because the children require them to bring more gear and the kids can't carry packs themselves yet. Also Llamas do very well in remote areas without trails. They can cross obstacles such as down timber, rocks, etc., very well.
- Boy scouts - Groups of boy scouts visit our ranch and even rent Llamas for day hikes on local trails that are close by.
- Business - We have animals for those looking for good breeding animals or trained packers to start their own Llama business. There are many different business opportunities that involve Llamas.
- Climbing - Mountain climbers, and rock climbers use Llamas to pack in heavy gear to set up base camps.
- Community service - Llamas are used for community service like packing the trash at roadside cleanups for the adopt a highway projects.
- Coyotes - Farmers and ranchers with sheep, goats, cattle and other livestock use Llamas as guard animals to protect their animals from coyotes.
- Driving, cart pulling - Driving is a term used for animals that are trained to pull buggies or carts. Like horses and Llamas do. Llama shows have many classes that the Llamas compete in such as Halter classes, public relations, obstacle, driving, packing, and many more.
- Environment - The US forest service prefers llamas for packstock because they are browsers not grazers and don't require feed to be packed in and introduce undesirable weeds into an area. They also have soft padded feet instead of hooves and are very easy on the trails and fragile ecosystems. Their poop is small pellets like that of deer and elk. Llamas in general are very easy on the environment.
- Farm - Sometimes places like ours are called Llama farms or Llama ranches. Also farms and ranches use Llamas for predator control such as stray dogs and coyotes.
- Fertilizer - Llama poop is used for fertilizer in house plants, gardens, yards, etc.
- FFA - Future Farmers of America.
- Fishing - Fisherman use Llamas to pack into remote lakes and streams. Every year more and more roads are being closed by the forest services, United States Forest Service(USFS), Bureau of Land Management(BLM), and others. Old roads become great Llama hiking trails.
- Future Farmers of America - Primarily high school students who participate in traditional and alternative methods in farming and ranching which includes things like Domestic elk herds, Ostriches, Alpacas, Llamas, etc.
- Girl scouts - Groups of girl scouts visit our ranch and even rent Llamas for day hikes on local trails that are close by.
- Golf caddies - On some golf courses Llamas are used to pack the golf clubs. The Llamas are referred to as golf caddies.
- Guard animals - Farmers and ranchers with sheep, goats, cattle and other livestock use Llamas as guard animals to protect their animals from predators like coyotes.
- Horses - More and more people who use their horses for trail riding, or packing are meeting Llamas on the trails. Most horses that have not seen Llamas before are frightened and some can really have a fit, even throwing and injuring their rider. We participate in an event each year where trail riders ride their horses down a trail and around every corner the horses meet something. Bicycle riders, backpackers, camps with dogs, trash (like a bag caught in a bush and blowing in the wind), Llama packers, etc. We have also provided our Llamas to people who want to get their horses use to Llamas.
- Hunting - Llamas are used by Deer, Elk, Lion, Bear, Turkey, Moose, Sheep, Goat and all kinds of hunters.
- LANA - Llama Association of North America.
- Livestock - Llamas are considered Livestock in most states. The laws and regulations for livestock do apply to Llamas.
- Llama Association of North America - This is a national Llama association. There are many national and local Llama associations. LANA's Youth Program - Promotes 4H, FFA, and Scout youth to participate in lama projects locally, with application to LANA's Youth Across America Program. This program, plus other programs that encourage competition for awards in Art, Essays and Community Service, recognize and honor the achievements of our youth and their importance to LANA.
